Vaginal pH and trying to conceive
Last updated
Vaginal pH measures how acidic the vaginal environment is. A healthy reading is typically between 3.8 and 4.5. The Shettles theory proposes that pH may affect X- and Y-bearing sperm differently, so Genesyx includes at-home pH strips to replace guesswork with readings. Genesyx never recommends douching.
What is vaginal pH?
pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that measures acidity. Below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline. A healthy vagina is naturally slightly acidic, typically between 3.8 and 4.5, which helps protect against infection.
Why pH matters in the Shettles theory
The Shettles theory proposes that a more acidic environment may favour X-bearing sperm and a more alkaline environment may favour Y-bearing sperm. This has not been consistently demonstrated in research.
How Genesyx uses pH readings
Your programme includes at-home vaginal pH test strips. You log each reading in the companion app, so you can see your readings alongside your cycle timing and nutrition.
What we will never recommend
- Douching, which the NHS advises against
- Vinegar, baking soda or other home remedies
- Anything that could irritate or harm vaginal tissue
A reading outside the usual range, or symptoms such as unusual discharge, odour or itching, are a reason to speak to your GP or a pharmacist.
Evidence for the Shettles theory is mixed. Genesyx helps you follow the theory consistently; no outcome is guaranteed. This page is general information, not medical advice.
